Stepping into Tong Ah Eating House is like taking a delightful journey back in time, a true Singaporean culinary institution that has gracefully preserved its heritage for over eight decades. As someone who has relished its offerings and delved into its rich history, I can confidently say it’s a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of old Singapore.

Originally established in 1939, Tong Ah first opened its doors in an iconic red-and-white building that became a beloved landmark on Keong Saik Road. While its physical address shifted a few doors down to its current spot at 35 Keong Saik Rd., Singapore, 089142, in 2013, the spirit and charm of this traditional kopitiam remain utterly intact. This move allowed it to continue serving generations of loyal patrons, ensuring its legacy endures.

The vibe at Tong Ah is quintessential kopitiam – bustling, unpretentious, and brimming with local character. It's the perfect spot for a quintessential Singaporean breakfast, where the clinking of porcelain cups and the aroma of freshly brewed kopi fill the air. The atmosphere evokes a sense of nostalgia, a welcome respite from the city's rapid pace, inviting you to slow down and savor the moment.

Without a doubt, the star of the show is their legendary Kaya Toast. While the Traditional Kaya Toast Set Meal, complete with perfectly Soft Boiled Eggs and a robust cup of kopi, is a classic choice, it's their Crispy Kaya Toast that truly sets Tong Ah apart. Thin slices of toast are grilled to an exquisite crispness, then slathered with homemade kaya (coconut jam) and a generous slab of cold butter, creating a symphony of textures and flavors that is simply unforgettable. It's a testament to simple ingredients executed flawlessly.

Beyond breakfast, Tong Ah Eating House also delights with a selection of satisfying zi char dishes, proving its versatility. Patrons often rave about the savory Kam Heong Chicken, the comforting Pork Trotters Beehoon, and the unique Coffee Ribs. For those craving more traditional fare, the Traditional Nasi Lemak offers a fragrant and flavorful option. Another standout is the Beef Hor Fun in Black Bean Sauce, showcasing the kitchen's skill in stir-frying. Each dish reflects a commitment to traditional flavors and hearty portions, making it ideal for lunch or a casual dinner.

In essence, Tong Ah Eating House is more than just a place to eat; it's a living piece of Singapore's culinary history. It embodies the warmth, tradition, and delicious simplicity that define the nation's food culture. Whether you're a local or a visitor, a trip here promises an authentic and deeply satisfying experience that will leave you with a taste of true Singaporean heritage.

What a quintessential Singaporean breakfast experience! The restaurant was quite bustling, leading to about a 15 to 20-minute wait for our table of five. However, the perfectly crisp toast, when dipped into the creamy soft-boiled eggs, made it absolutely worth every minute. For those wondering how to best enjoy it, my tip is to crack the eggs into a saucer, add a dash of dark soy sauce and a sprinkle of white pepper, give it a quick stir, and then use it as a delicious dip for your toast.

I visited Tong Ah Eating House with the hope of finding that warm, nostalgic old-school breakfast vibe, the kind that truly makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Unfortunately, my experience didn't quite live up to the nostalgic charm I had imagined. I ordered the classic breakfast set, which included boiled eggs, toast with kaya and butter, and tea, but the taste was honestly quite underwhelming. The toast lacked that fragrant, old-style charcoal crispness I was hoping for, and the kaya didn't have that rich, traditional flavor, making the whole set feel a bit ordinary. I also decided to try their nasi lemak, mainly because the packaging caught my eye with the anchovies and peanuts packed separately, which was an unusual detail for me. Taste-wise, it was just okay—nothing particularly outstanding, but certainly edible. What truly made me uncomfortable was when the staff started sweeping the floor while I was still eating; instead of feeling welcomed, it felt like I was being rushed to finish, and the dust circulating while I ate was far from pleasant. While they do serve lunch, based on this visit, the overall experience didn't quite deliver the comfort or the sense of nostalgia I had hoped for. Overall, it was just an average experience, with definite room for improvement, especially concerning service and the dining atmosphere.

This spot is truly perfect for a morning breakfast. While their crispy thin kaya toast, which I absolutely loved, does take a bit of time to be served – I'd estimate around five minutes per order, as my companion's identical item arrived five minutes earlier than mine – the food itself is good. I would definitely eat here again, as it's well worth the wait if you're not in a hurry.

This has been our cherished eating spot for a very long time. We consistently find ourselves ordering the same beloved dishes, and honestly, we never tire of them. On this visit, we unfortunately missed out on the crispy toast, a must-have that needs to be ordered before 6:30 PM if you're hoping to enjoy it as a dessert or to take away for supper. Pairing it all with a Kopi O truly makes for the ultimate combination!

I discovered this wonderful local eatery thanks to a tip from a bartender in the area. It was a refreshing change from the usual fancy international options, offering truly authentic local cuisine. Given the late hour, we found ourselves to be almost the sole diners, which led to a delightful interaction where the proprietor personally came out to chat with us and offer some excellent dish recommendations. Every suggestion was spot on, making for a memorable meal.

The kaya toast was absolutely delicious, and the coffee, with its wonderful fragrance, was just perfect. I truly enjoyed sitting at an outdoor table, taking in the charming view of buildings adorned with beautiful Peranakan architecture. Everything about the experience was simply great.

I found this establishment to be a welcoming spot for enjoying a traditional breakfast. Personally, I felt the crispy kaya toast was a touch dry, and the pandan kaya sauce didn't quite deliver a full-bodied flavor experience. In summary, it's a place one might consider visiting, but it's best to temper expectations.

Following a TikTok recommendation, I certainly wasn't disappointed with my visit. Our breakfast at this traditional Chinese eatery was truly enjoyable, with the steamed dishes standing out as a particular favorite. My only minor note was that the coffee proved to be quite strong for my personal taste.

My breakfast experience was quite a letdown, starting with an exceptionally long wait for just one French kaya toast, which, disappointingly, arrived without any butter. The kaya jam itself had a strange, coarse consistency and a taste so off-putting it was almost sickening. On a slightly brighter note, the dim sum, particularly the siew may, proved to be quite enjoyable.
